A couple of months ago while attending IFBC in Portland, I became the proud recipient of the handy, dandy Ninja 3-in-1 Cooking System. I’ve had a couple of months to put it to work in my kitchen and now the generous folks at Ninja Kitchen have provided me with one to give away to one of you!
You may be thinking this is just a slow cooker, but, oh no, it is so much more! In addition to the programmable Slow Cook setting, there is a Stovetop and an Oven setting that make it a 3-in-1 appliance unlike any other.
Instead of telling you, I’m going to show you a couple of the meals I’ve created using my beloved Ninja. Enough chatter, let’s get cooking
Steam infused oven roasting is one of the features that really got me excited. I mean, who wouldn’t be excited by steam infused oven roasting?!
I started with a nearly 6 pound whole chicken that I seasoned with salt and pepper. With the unit set to Stovetop High, I seared my seasoned chicken on both sides until it was nice and golden brown.
I removed the chicken to the roasting rack that is included with the unit and added 4 cups of chicken broth to the pot. I added chopped cloves of garlic and sliced onion to the broth but you can get creative and add in anything you’d like. After roasting the chicken, you’ll be able to use this lovely broth to make gravy, right in the same pot.
Time to transfer the roasting rack with the seared chicken back into the unit, over the broth. I seasoned the chicken with some lemon zest and chopped, fresh rosemary. The lemon can then be quartered and stuffed inside the cavity, along with some sprigs of rosemary.
Switch the unit to the Oven setting at 375.
An hour and 15 minutes later, my chicken was fully cooked and falling off the bone tender. This is steam roasting folks.
To make perfect gravy, strain the broth, return it to the pot and turn it the Stovetop setting. You can add some wine, or dry sherry, if you like, and thicken with a slurry of water and cornstarch.
The cookbook includes an entire section of one pot, 30 minute meals, or what I like to call “crazy, busy day meals”. This Hearty Skillet Lasagna was SO incredibly easy to throw together. I was stunned at how quickly I had this dinner on the table and my boys absolutely loved it.
Using the Stovetop setting, I browned one pound of ground beef, adding a little garlic and Italian Seasoning. Again, you can get creative here by adding anything you like. Mushrooms would be great, other veggies, seasonings. Anything goes.
Now the fun part, break 10 uncooked lasagna noodles into pieces and place them over the cooked ground beef. For some reason, breaking up lasagna noodles was fun for me. I think I need to get out more often.
Pour a jar of prepared pasta sauce over the lasagna noodles and add one cup of water. I know, seems weird but it’s going to work, I promise! Now, just cover it and allow it to cook about 20 minutes.
After the cooking time, mix in a bag of fresh spinach.
Next, the cheese. I used fresh mozzarella and some ricotta mixed with Parmesan. Let it sit for a couple of minutes for the cheese to melt.
Hearty Skillet Lasagna. Ready in 30 minutes and absolutely delicious!
The cookbook includes over 150 recipes, including both the Lemon Chicken with Rosemary and the Hearty Skillet Lasagna.
Of course, the unit also works wonderfully as a slow cooker. The Stovetop setting allows you to sear the meat right in the same pot before you switch it over to the programmable Slow Cooker setting. No need to dirty another pot. Less dishes, less mess, less trouble. Set the cooking time and it will automatically switch off and keep the meal warm until you are ready to serve.
The steam oven baking feature allows you to produce lighter but extremely rich and moist, baked goods using half the fat in conventional recipes.
