We spent the day in San Francisco recently and while there, we took the opportunity to visit Tartine Bakery. If you find yourself in San Francisco and happen to enjoy the highest quality pastries, breads, hot-pressed sandwiches, and expertly brewed espresso drinks, Tartine should be on your list of things to do. If that’s your kind of thing, then this is your place.

That’s my kind of thing.

The outside of Tartine Bakery.
The first thing you’ll notice on arrival is the totally unassuming building at the corner of Guerrero and 18th. The building has no sign but you’ll know you are in the right place when you see the line of people streaming out the door. The line moved quickly for us though and the short wait gave me just enough time to scan the menu and decide what to order.

A variety of pastries for sale.
There are both sweet and savory pastries in their bakery cases that are available all day. Here is a view of a few of the items in the savory case. You can order from the totally scrumptious hot-pressed sandwich menu daily after 11:30 a.m. Their rustic loaves of bread are baked fresh daily and available after 4:30 p.m.

Two coffee and a Ham and Cheese Croissant.
We settled in on this huge, unbelievably flaky Ham and Cheese Croissant and some very artfully prepared caffe lattes.

A fork tears open and reveals the center of the ham and cheese croissant.
Look at all those layers of flaky goodness. And the filling….oh, the filling!

I’m still recovering.

Customers in line at the bakery.
We chose a few more items to bring home for the boys. I got one of everything.

Okay, Paul wouldn’t let me, but I wanted to!

Tartine Cookcook.

Pastry chef Elisabeth Prueitt and her husband, renowned baker Chad Robertson have translated their wonderful recipes to this beautiful cookbook for the home cook. The book includes tons of practical advice and great tips to help you master the techniques necessary for baking up both their sweet and savory delights. You’ll find detailed instructions for baking Croissants, Brioche, and their totally luscious desserts including  Banana Coconut Cream Pie and the Blueberry-Lemon Cream Chiffon Tart. There are also lots of goodies for brunch, lunch, and appetizers. If you are a baker, or if you just enjoy looking at gorgeous photos of pastries, this cookbook should be in your collection.

Since it’s been some time since I’ve held a giveaway, and because I love each and every one of you for visiting From Valerie’s Kitchen, and to express my deep and meaningful love of pastries, I am giving away a copy of Tartine to one lucky winner.

That’s one of my favorite bakeries! I know, the flakiness is amazing! I wish I could live right next to the store. I didn’t know I haven’t liked your page as me (but I do as JOC).
