Ingredients

  • 1 cup root beer
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • ¼ cup orange juice fresh or bottled
  • ¼ cup Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon unsulphured molasses like Grandma's Original Unsulphured Molasses
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • ½ teaspoon Liquid Smoke
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper or to taste
  • salt to taste

Instructions

  • Combine all the ingredients through the pepper in heavy medium saucepan. Bring the mixture to boil over MEDIUM heat, stirring occasionally. Reduce the heat to MEDIUM-LOW and simmer for 8 to 10 minutes to blend the flavors and reduce the sauce slightly. Season to taste with salt and additional pepper, if desired.
  • Allow the sauce to cool slightly then transfer it a mason jar or other airtight container. Cover and refrigerate until ready to use.

Notes

Recipe yields approximately 2 ½ cups of sauce.
Storage
Root Beer BBQ Sauce will keep well for one to two weeks if stored in an airtight container and refrigerated promptly. For longer storage, transfer the completely cooled sauce to a freezer-safe container or plastic storage bag and freeze. Safely thaw the frozen sauce in your refrigerator overnight before using. For the best quality, use frozen homemade sauces within 6 months.
