I have a thing for frozen yogurt that goes waaaaay back. All of you Pinkberry, Yogurtland people out there may not realize that frozen yogurt was ALL THAT and a bag of chips (minus the chips) back in the 80’s. It was the decade of the low-fat diet and this creamy, dreamy, ice cream-like creation with zero or little fat was a nothing short of a revelation.

People lined up for the stuff for years and then poof, the fad just sort of faded away and nearly all of the yogurt shops near us closed. We were left sad and yogurt-less. That is until the recent resurgence of this delicious treat and all of the new, fabulous, self-service yogurt shops that have opened up. Hallelujah!

With the help of a food processor and an ice cream maker, making your own frozen yogurt at home is easy as can be. It’s fun too!

Ingredient Notes

Fresh peaches, Greek yogurt, sugar and vanilla with text.
  • Fresh peaches – See my tips below for choosing the best peaches. When peaches are in season, fresh is best, but you can make Peach Frozen Yogurt all year long if you keep a bag of frozen peaches stocked in your freezer. See the Notes section of the recipe card for details.
  • Plain Greek yogurt – The naturally thick, creamy consistency of plain Greek yogurt makes it a good choice for making frozen yogurt. You want either 2% or whole milk plain Greek yogurt. Don’t use yogurt with a fat content less than 2% for the creamiest result.
  • Granulated sugar
  • Pure vanilla extract – Vanilla warms up the flavor of the yogurt and is perfect with peaches.

How to Choose the Best Peaches

Choose medium to large peaches are free of bruises and have good color. They should be vibrant yellow or orange with a deep red blush. Fresh peaches will be firm and will need a little time at home, stored at room temperature, to soften slightly before you eat them or use them in recipes. Once softened, they should be stashed in the fridge to slow the ripening process.

How to Make Peach Frozen Yogurt

This is a quick overview of how to make this recipe. You’ll find detailed instructions in the recipe card at the end of this post.

Ingredients for peach yogurt in a food processor bowl, ice cream maker, and metal loaf pan.
  • Peel, pit, and chop 3 large peaches into chunks and place them in a the bowl of a food processor. You’ll need a large capacity machine for this recipe like my Cuisinart 9-Cup Food Processor. Add the sugar and process until smooth. Add the yogurt and vanilla extract and process again until well combined.
  • Transfer the mixture to an ice cream maker and follow the manufacturer’s directions for the freezing process. I let the yogurt process for about 20 minutes in my Cuisinart 2-Quart Ice Cream Maker.
  • I like to add some chopped peach towards the end of the processing time to add some texture and more great peach flavor to the yogurt.
  • About 5 minutes later we have frozen yogurt! Transfer the yogurt to a freezer-safe container. A metal loaf pan works great.

The yogurt will be soft-serve consistency if served right away. I think it’s perfect this way or after it’s in the freezer for an hour or two and is slightly more frozen and scoopable. If you leave it in the freezer overnight, it will be frozen solid and you’ll need to let it sit out for 15 minutes or so to allow it to soften a bit before serving.

How to Store Frozen Yogurt

Transfer your frozen yogurt to a freezer-safe container like a metal loaf pan. Tupperware or similar plastic containers with an airtight lid work well too. To help prevent ice crystals and freezer burn, press a piece of wax paper or parchment paper over the surface of the yogurt and then cover the container with the lid or a piece of foil. Homemade frozen yogurt is best if consumed within a week.

Ingredients

  • 4 large fresh peaches, peeled and pitted (see Notes below if using frozen peaches)
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 3 cups 2% or whole plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Instructions

  • Cut three of the peeled, pitted peaches into large chunks and place them in the bowl of a food processor with the sugar. Pulse until completely smooth. Add the Greek yogurt and vanilla. Pulse again until well combined. Transfer the yogurt mixture to an ice cream maker and freeze according to manufacturer's directions.
  • Meanwhile, dice the remaining peach and add to yogurt as it's processing, about 5 minutes before the end of the recommended freezing time. Serve immediately or transfer to an airtight freezer-safe container. Press wax paper or parchment paper over the surface of the frozen yogurt and cover the container with the lid or foil and transfer to the freezer.

Freezing/Serving Tips

  • Frozen yogurt will be soft-serve consistency if served immediately after processing. If frozen, it will firm up more. To soften, allow to sit out for 10 to 15 minutes before scooping and serving.

Notes

Yields approximately 1 quart.

Using Frozen Peaches
You can substitute 5 to 6 cups of sliced frozen peaches for the fresh peaches. If still frozen, puree them all with the yogurt in first step of the recipe. If you’d like to add some diced peaches at the end, allow them to thaw slightly so they are easy to chop before adding to the ice cream maker.

We made this last night for Sunday Family Dinner on a Saturday. Followed your recipe to a tee and this is BY FAR the very best peach frozen yogurt we’ve ever had! We served it on top of The Silver Palate’s Bishop’s Cake (one of the best pound cake recipes out there).
THANK you for sharing such a wonderful recipe!

(I used our Krups 2 quart ice cream maker that’s at least 20 years old. When I added the peaches toward the end, the mixture never got firm. We finally stopped the machine and just put the bowl in the freezer. Several hours later, just before serving dessert, we mixed the frozen yogurt by hand in the machine bowl and the consistency turned out to be perfect.)
