Ingredient Notes

The ingredients for Chex Mix with overlay text.
  • Corn and Rice Chex Cereal – The original recipe calls for Wheat Chex as well but we like Corn and Rice Chex better, so this is how I’ve always done it.
  • Small pretzel twists
  • Mixed nuts – I like to use a variety of mixed nuts with a little extra cocktail peanuts.
  • Melted butter
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Lawry’s Seasoned Salt
  • Granulated garlic– I like the consistency and potency of granulated garlic but you can substitute garlic powder if you’d like.
  • Onion powder

How to Make Chex Mix

Seasoned melted butter is poured over chex mix, pretzels and peanuts.
  1. Combine the Chex cereal, pretzels, and nuts on a large rimmed baking sheet. Add Worcestershire and seasonings to melted butter and stir to combine.
  2. Pour over the cereal mixture on the baking sheet and use a spoon to mix until everything is well coated. Transfer to a preheated 250 degree F oven and bake for 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes.

Secret to the Best Chex Mix

Baking the Chex Mix in the oven at a low temperature for a long time is the key to success. It bakes the buttery seasoning into the ingredients until they are perfectly toasted. The long cooking time and the ratio of butter and seasoning is what makes this the best Chex Mix recipe ever! Just be sure to mix it well every 15 minutes throughout the cooking time so that it will toast slowly and evenly.

Chex Mix Variations

For the Chex Cereal Base (7 cups) – Use a combination of any type of Chex cereal you’d like to equal 7 cups – Corn, Rice, Honey Nut, or Wheat. Try replacing 1 cup of the Chex with Cheerios.

Crackers and/or Pretzels (2 cups) – Reduce or eliminate the pretzels and replace them with the same amount of cheese crackers, bagel chips, oyster crackers, Bugles, or corn chips.

Nuts (1 cup) – Use a combination of your favorite nuts. Cashews, macadamia nuts, pistachios, and almonds are all delicious. Honey roasted peanuts will add a sweet element.

Storage

The best way to store Chex Mix is to transfer the cooled mixture to a gallon size zippered plastic storage bag. Press out as much air as possible and seal the bag.

Homemade Chex Mix will stay fresh for 2 to 3 weeks if stored in an airtight container at room temperature. For longer storage you can freeze it for up to 3 to 4 months.

This a a must at our house during the Christmas season. In fact, I make many batches to gift because so many of my neighbors love it too. I do like to gild the lily a bit by tripling the nuts. Cashews, Macadamias or and/or almonds are our fav. Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones, Valerie!
