I think of Brown Sugar Toast as the rich, caramelized cousin of cinnamon toast, and honestly? It’s so much better.

One bite and you’ll get it. The top is sweet, buttery, and crisp. The inside stays soft and tender. Total toast perfection. This easy recipe turns a few simple ingredients into something surprisingly irresistible.

Don’t save this one just for breakfast, a slice of Brown Sugar Toast with your aftertoon coffee or tea is an absolute delight. And, the kiddos will LOVE it for an after school snack with a cold glass of milk.

Ingredient Notes

Slices of shokupan bread on a plate and butter and brown sugar in small bowls with text overlay.
  • Bread: Shokupan (Japanese milk bread) is a soft, slightly sweet white bread that’s perfect for this recipe. Its pillowy texture and richness soak up the brown sugar-butter mixture like a dream. You can find shokupan at Japanese or Asian markets, but if you can locate a loaf, any thick-cut, soft white bread will do the trick. The best alternatives are challah or brioche. And, if you’ve got brioche, save a few slices to make the best Brioche French Toast.
  • Butter: Use regular salted butter, softened to a spreadable consistency. Margarine or alternative butter spreads don’t provide the same rich flavor or caramelization, so I don’t recommend them for this recipe.
  • Brown sugar: For the best color and caramelization, go with dark brown sugar.

How to Make Brown Sugar Toast

Four images of a butter and brown sugar mixture being spread on sliced bread and the bread toasting in a skillet.
  1. Mix the softened butter and brown sugar in a small bowl.
  2. Spread the mixture on one side of the slices of bread.
  3. Place the bread, buttered side down, in a skillet, then spread the top side with the remaining mixture.
  4. Cook over medium heat on both sides. As the brown sugar melts, the surface will become golden brown and caramelized. Transfer the toast to a wire rack to crisp as it cools.

Serving Suggestions

Brown Sugar Toast is delicious all on its own or your breakfast plate, but you can also dress it up for dessert. Try topping it with a dollop of whipped cream and fresh berries, serve it warm with sautéed apples and a scoop of vanilla ice cream, or finish it with vanilla ice cream and chopped pecans for a quick and easy treat.

For a cozy seasonal twist, try adding a pinch of cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice to the butter mixture before cooking.

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon salted butter, softened
  • 1 tablespoon dark brown sugar
  • 1 slice shokupan, Japanese milk bread, can use Texas toast or brioche

Instructions

  • In a small bowl, combine the butter and dark brown sugar until creamy and combined.
  • Spread half of the amount evenly over one side of the bread. Place the bread, buttered side down in a nonstick skillet and spread the other side with the remaining butter/sugar mixture.
  • Set the heat under the skillet to MEDIUM and cook for 3 minutes or until dark brown and caramelized on the bottom side, reducing the heat if needed to prevent it from burning. Flip and cook for an additional 3 minutes to cook the other side.
  • Transfer the Brown Sugar Toast to a wire rack to cool slightly. It will crisp even more as it rests.
