This versatile Creamy Tomatillo Avocado Salsa recipe transforms a jar of green salsa into a delicious dip for tortilla chips or a super flavorful taco topping. Ready in 5 minutes with just 4 ingredients!
Another SUPER fast appetizer recipe that I rely on over and over again is my restaurant style Blender Salsa.
I came up with this quick and easy green salsa recipe 5 years ago. Ever since it’s been a regular on my game day party menus. It’s ridiculously easy and the stuff is irresistible. It also happens to be pretty wholesome which is always a bonus in my book.

Ingredient Notes
A little nonfat Greek yogurt, an avocado, and lots of cilantro completely transform a jar of green salsa. After a quick whirl in a food processer you’ve got a super easy party snack.
My favorite brand of tomatillo salsa is Herdez Salsa Verde but you can use any store bought brand you love. My homemade Roasted Tomatilla Salsa, would be awesome but this is intended to be a quick, no-fuss recipe. And, I’m here to tell you that it’s seriously delicious with store bought salsa.
Is Avocado Tomatillo Salsa Spicy?
You might be tempted to add jalapeno but it is not necessary. Most store-bought tomatillo salsas have some heat and the Greek yogurt calms the heat down a bit. I think the mild to medium spiciness of this creamy avocado salsa makes it suitable for serving a crowd.
How to Make Creamy Tomatillo Avocado Salsa
This recipe is nearly as easy as opening a jar of salsa and pouring it into a bowl, but the end result is so much better.
- Add the green salsa, nonfat plain Greek yogurt, avocado and a good amount of cilantro together in a food processor or blender.
- Then, just give it a whirl until it reaches a creamy consistency.
The flavor and texture of the salsa will improve if it has some time in the fridge so make it an hour or more before you want to serve it. Let it chill out in the fridge while you attend to other tasks.
Serving Suggestions
We can devour an entire bowl full of this creamy green salsa with tortilla chips. It’s also a great condiment for tacos and burrito bowls. A nice alternative to other salsas or sour cream.
It’s just the perfect thing to add some zing to Crock-Pot Chicken Tacos, Blackened Fish Tacos, or Carne Asada Tacos.
Storage
Transfer any leftovers to an airtight container and keep it in the refrigerator. With avocado being one of the main components, I think the quality is best when consumed within 24 hours.
Wholesome and Yummy!
A typical Super Bowl menu is usually loaded with chicken wings, cheesy dips and other assorted indulgences and this wholesome dip is a great way to offer something a little less guilt-inducing and with an nutritional punch.
Place some chopped veggies next to the bowl for a light and healthy appetizer.

How long does this keep in fridge
Valerie, we loved this recipe! It will be a regular recipe in our house from now on.
I’m so glad to hear it! Thanks for stopping by 🙂
I saw ads for this brand on TV. I didn`t know it was so new! Adding avocado to it seems like a great idea!
I’m definitely trying this. I absolutely LOVE anything tomatillo, and I can’t believe that even with the limited Mexican selection here in Montana, I can actually find these sauces from Herdez! I see taco night in my future!
Oooh, I love avocados so much. This looks like the perfect salsa!
I love tomatillos…I mean love! What a greta idea to mix with Greek yogurt and avocado!! I am going to try that soon!
You could not have made life more easy!!! Thank you for sharing. The simple, easy and requiring very few ingredients – what could one ask for. The only thing preventing me to make it right away – a trip to the grocery store for tomatillo verde!! A must try! 🙂
That looks absolutely deeelish!! It looks a lot like a sauce served at my favorite Mexican restaraunt…I will definitely be doing this one! Only thing I need to get is the yogurt. Thanks for posting!

This looks amazing! I’m adding the tomatillo sauce to today’s shopping list so I can give this a try!
