A delicious, from-scratch teriyaki sauce turns ordinary steak into a flavorful Grilled Steak Teriyaki. Serve with rice and stir-fried vegetables for a quick, wholesome meal.
I hope you all had a fabulous 4th! I swear, I blinked and it was over. It’s a rare thing when my husband and I have two days off in a row and we savored every minute of it. Paul was up and out of the house in the wee hours of the morning today {yawn} and I’m just about to head up to my office and get back at it. Before I get lost in the thrilling world of bookkeeping, I wanted to share a great recipe for the grill with you all, that with a little prep, you can have on your dinner table in under 30 minutes.
Although I take advantage of many prepared sauces in my recipes, I am not a fan of store-bought teriyaki sauce. No sir, not a fan. It’s too thick and too sticky sweet for my taste and many times, loaded with sodium. Who needs that?
So, alas, it is on my list of items that I prefer to make from scratch. It is really very easy and your efforts will pay off big time.
And, here is my favorite way to serve it. Drizzled over grilled steak with rice and stir-fried veggies. Love, love, love this quick, easy meal! Come to mama.
To save time, make a batch of the sauce and store it in a container in the fridge so it’s ready for you when you need it. Just warm it briefly in the microwave and you’ll be good to go. You may want to thin it with a little water if it has thickened too much.
Let’s get grilling!
I always stock up on both top sirloin and flank steak on my visits to Costco and both cuts are an excellent choice for this recipe. If I had to choose, I think top sirloin is my favorite, especially the top sirloin I buy from Costco. I have found it significantly better in quality than the sirloin at my local grocery store.
To infuse a bit more flavor into the meat, I made a very simple garlic soy marinade and let it marinate in a plastic storage bag for a couple of hours in the fridge before firing up the grill. The marinade consists of lite soy sauce, a bit of olive oil, some minced garlic, and fresh ground black pepper. There is so much flavor in the teriyaki sauce that we’re going to drizzle over the grilled steak that honestly – if you are in a hurry, you can skip the marinade altogether and just drizzle the steaks with some olive oil, season them with salt and pepper, and pop them on the grill.
Cook the steak to your liking. I always try to reach the medium, pink in the center, stage. For these sirloin steaks, that takes about 7 minutes per side. It will differ for you depending on the thickness of your steak.
Transfer the grilled steak to a cutting board and slice it thinly, against the grain.
Drizzle the sliced beef with some of the teriyaki sauce (see recipe below for sauce directions). Reserve the remaining sauce for serving.
Garnish the steak with sesame seeds and chopped green onion and you are ready to serve!
Let everyone build their own steak teriyaki bowls and be sure to have that extra sauce out for an extra drizzle…or two.
Grilled Steak Teriyaki
Ingredients
- 2 ½ pounds beef top sirloin or flank steak
Garlic Soy Marinade:
- ½ cup reduced sodium soy sauce, or tamari for gluten-free
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 teaspoon minced garlic
- ¼ teaspoon freshly ground pepper
Teriyaki Sauce:
- ⅓ cup reduced sodium soy sauce, or tamari for gluten-free
- ⅓ cup mirin, sweet rice wine
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- ½ teaspoon finely grated or minced fresh ginger
- ½ teaspoon minced garlic
- ⅓ cup water
- 2 teaspoons cornstarch
For Garnish:
- 2 tablespoons sesame seeds
- 3 or 4 green onions, chopped
Instructions
- Place steak in a gallon-sized resealable plastic storage bag. Combine Garlic Soy Marinade ingredients in a small bowl and pour over the steak. Seal the bag and refrigerate for a minimum of 1 hour or up to 6 hours.
- Cook steaks on a heated grill for approximately 7 to 10 minutes per side. The amount of time needed to cook your steak to the desired level will depend on the thickness of your cut.
- Meanwhile, whisk together all of the Teriyaki Sauce ingredients, through garlic, in a small saucepan. Place over medium heat. Whisk the cornstarch into the water until dissolved and then add the mixture to the pan. Cook, stirring until slightly thickened. Remove from heat.
- Thinly slice the steak across the grain and drizzle with some of the sauce. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and green onion and serve with remaining sauce on the side.

You always do such beautiful food, Valerie!
Alas, I have changed schedules at work, I go late into the evening now, so I’m not able to collaborate on a nice dinner with my wife during the week anymore. But I guarantee ya, I will grill this up at some point over the weekend!
I agree with you, bottled teriyaki sauces are by and large too salty or sweet, so this looks to be the perfect compromise. I make up my own stir-fry sauce ahead of time by the quart, so this is right in my wheelhouse.
Valerie this looks so yummy!
